Creative Writing Events (MTSU & local)

  • Raiders Write, a creative writing club, meets every Monday in KUC 314 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. We provide a space to get to know other writers and take some time out of a busy week to sit down and write, along with regular writing sprints and opportunities for critique. Throughout the semester we’re also hosting a few workshops to discuss providing constructive criticism, novel writing, world building, and dialogue. We’re open to writers at all different points in their journey, so if you’re interested, stop by or join our Discord.
  • In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series presents a special event in honor of National Hispanic Heritage Month featuring poet Luivette Resto, hosted by Dr. Fred Arroyo. Thursday, October 3 at 4:30 pm in the Sam Ingram Building (ING) MT Center. Free and open to the community.
  • In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series presents an Open Mic & Café hosted by Dr. Fred Arroyo. Thursday, October 10 at 4:30 pm in the Sam Ingram Building (ING) MT Center. Each writer is invited to share four minutes of poetry, fiction, cnf, drama, or song. Free and open to the community.
  • In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series presents playwright Kate McGunagle. Thursday, October 17 at 4:30 pm in the Sam Ingram Building (ING) MT Center. Free and open to the community.
  • In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series presents multi-genre writer Gaylord Brewer. Thursday, October 24 at 4:30 pm in the Sam Ingram Building (ING) MT Center. Free and open to the community.
  • The 36th Annual Southern Festival of Books will be held in Nashville, October 26-27.
  • In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series presents a staged reading of The Last Time We Saw Madison, a new play-in-progress written by Tira Palmquist and directed by Sarah Hall. Thursday, November 7 at 4:30 pm in the Sam Ingram Building (ING) MT Center. Free and open to the community. 
  • In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series presents an Open Mic & Café hosted by Dr. Fred Arroyo. Thursday, November 14 at 4:30 pm in the Sam Ingram Building (ING) MT Center. Each writer is invited to share four minutes of poetry, fiction, cnf, drama, or song. Free and open to the community.
  • In Process: A Creative Writing Event Series presents an end-of-semester Multi-genre Celebration featuring four faculty writers: Claudia BarnettMary LeosonBryanna Licciardi, and Jennifer Wachtel Kates. Thursday, November 21 at 4:30 pm in the Sam Ingram Building (ING) MT Center. Free and open to the community.

Calls for Student Writing

  • Scientia is now accepting submissions for its 2025 issue. Scientia Et Humanitas publishes graduate and undergraduate academic research. Submissions are open to all MTSU students and recent graduates from any discipline. For guidelines and information on how to submit, visit their website. Fall 2024 Submission Deadline: Friday, October 18, 2024; Spring 2025 Submission Deadline: Friday, February 7, 2025.
  • Off Center is accepting submissions of prose, poetry, artwork, and sound projects from the MTSU community. Visit their website for guidelines
  • Outrageous Fortune, the country’s first nationwide online literary magazine for and by undergraduates, is currently accepting submissions of all genres: fiction, non-fiction, drama, film, art, photography, and poetry, and digital files such as video-recorded spoken word and short films. Submissions are accepted on a rolling basis. Visit their website for guidelines.
  • “Do you want to write about Movies, TV, Anime, Arts, Comics, Games, Literature or other art forms? Do you want to get your foot in the door and enter the big-wide world of the online media and have your work read and shared by millions of readers?   • The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has posted a useful guide to undergraduate journals in art and literature.
